Our walking trips are designed to be accessible to all who are in good health and enjoy the outdoors, but fitness levels are important and you should consider carefully which level of walking is right for you.
For our more challenging walks a good preparation can vastly enhance your enjoyment. Stamina building, aerobic exercises, cycling, jogging and walking beforehand will make a noticeable difference.
Everyone has their own comfortable walking pace and we always aim to accommodate this. Our holidays are aimed at groups of walkers who know each other and walk with each other so we adapt our pace accordingly to keep the group walking together as even in a small group there will be differences in ability.
We have 3 levels of walks, Leisurely, Moderate and Challenging but this is just a guide, some walks are considered to be between two different levels.
Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness can complete this level of walking.
The average walk in this category would be around 8 to 12 kms and with a walking time of 4 hours. These are generally low altitude walks on good paths and tracks with a combined ascent and descent less than 400m. We make numerous rest stops to admire the scenery and nature or to take photographs.
It all makes for a very pleasant relaxing days walk.
This level of walking would suit people who are used to walking in the hills of for example the Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales.
The average length of walk is between 4 and a half and 5 and a half hours plus rest and lunch stops.
These walks are generally between 12 and 15 kms long with higher altitude and ascents and descents of between 400 to 600 metres but again on good paths or tracks.
The Moderate level of walks are by far the most popular with our guests, still with plenty of time to stop and admire the wonderful scenery they make for a full day and we feel suitably challenged by the time we arrive at the bar for a refreshing and well earned drink.
This level is ideal for those regularly walking up the high peaks of the UK, the “ Peak Baggers “.
These high altitude routes involve quite a strenuous day, ascending up to 1000m, walking 6 or 7 hours and with distances between 12 and 20 kms.
Most of the walks are along decent paths but sometimes on more difficult terrain.
The challenging walks are obviously dependent on good mountain walking weather conditions due to the altitude, up to 2000m, much higher in the Alpujarra.
We would not expect to do more than one or two challenging walks in the same week, we would recommend varying the different levels.
This is just a guide to the different levels of walks we can offer.
All three levels of walks can be done in the Sierras of Almijarra, Grazalema and the Alpujarra.
In the Cabo de Gata Natural Park we only offer Leisurely and Moderate walks.
Once you have chosen your destination we can discuss your preferred options and then leave it to us to prepare a full and detailed walking itinerary for you.
