This area is Andalucía’s largest coastal protected area, a wild, isolated volcanic landscape meeting the blue seas of the Mediterranean. Here we have Europe’s only recognised semi-desert, the driest area of Europe, and these combinations have created a beautiful totally unspoilt coastline and a coastal path unrivalled in Spain.
In 1997 Cabo de Gata was designated a unesco biosphere reserve due to it’s unique geology, vegetation and coral reef marine life.
Our base is the village of San Jose, just over 2 hours from Malaga and 30 minutes from Almeria airport. San Jose sits on the coast, a tranquil resort yet with an abundance of restaurants serving fresh sea food.
Your time in Cabo de Gata will concentrate on walking various sections of the gr92 coastal path linking several small coves and fishing villages and also venturing inland to sample a desert walk or a fascinating walk amongst the abandoned gold mines.
Our hotel in Cabo de Gata is set on the coast of San Jose bay with stunning views from the hotel over the Mediterranean. The hotel is the Dona Pakyta, a short walk from the centre of San Jose and with it’s own steps down to a golden sandy beach.
The hotel has an excellent restaurant and bar, rooms with private bathrooms, heating, air conditioning and sea views.
Breakfast is served in the restaurant overlooking the sea and we enjoy an evening meal in the hotel’s restaurant.
During our week, we spend evenings sampling the Mediterranean cuisine in other village restaurants.

Our accommodation will be in a small hotel close to the sea.
For our Cabo de Gata coastal path experience the minimum group size is 4 and maximum 24.
